ASTM D5379

Engineered in strict accordance with ASTM D5379/D5379M, our V-notched beam shear fixture (Iosipescu shear fixture) is designed to determine the shear properties of composite materials, including shear strength and shear modulus. Built with high-strength steel and featuring precision low-friction bushings, it ensures the moving half slides effortlessly along the vertical guide rod for highly accurate and repeatable results. Equipped with a locating block for quick specimen installation and available in various configurations (including high-temperature and fatigue models), it provides essential shear data for structural design, material development, and quality control in advanced composite applications.

Overview

Used with a platen on the bottom (not included), the fixture is engineered according to ASTM D5379/D5379M for tests to obtain shear property values such as shear strength and shear modulus of various reinforced composite laminates for structural designs, material development and quality control.

The testing involves a rectangular specimen where a 90-degree notch is made on both side edges in the middle section. Compression force is applied on the moving half of the fixture to generate shear stress on the notched area while strain is measured with strain gauges or video extensometers.

Design Features and Benefits

• Built with high strength steel and machined to tight tolerance, the fixture is durable and corrosion-resistant and can operate reliably over a long time.
• Accurate and repeatable results are ensured with low friction movement. The moving half of the fixture is fitted with bushing to effortlessly slide along the vertical guiding rod with minimum friction.
• The fixture comes with a locating block to aid quick specimen installation.
• Choices of connecting interfaces are available to accommodate different machine sizes.
• Model variations are available for high-temperature testing and for thick specimens.

Design Features and Benefits

• Used to determine the shear strength and shear modulus of composite materials using the V-notched beam method.
• Essential for testing reinforced composite laminates in aerospace, automotive, and advanced materials research.
