ASTM D4018 Fiberglass Thread Test

The ADJQ253B Pneumatic Side-Action Grip is a precision pneumatic tensile grip developed for testing in accordance with ASTM D4018, Standard Test Methods for Properties of Continuous Filament Carbon and Graphite Fiber Tows. It is designed for tensile testing of resin-impregnated and consolidated carbon fiber tow specimens with cardboard-reinforced ends. The grip is also suitable for thin, flexible materials, including plastic films, aluminum and copper foils, waterproofing membranes, and textile fabrics.

Overview

The grip uses a single-acting pneumatic lever-amplification mechanism with side-action, parallel clamping. It applies uniform, stable clamping pressure and promotes axial specimen alignment, helping minimize slippage, grip-induced breakage, off-axis loading, and premature failure in the gripping area. Two quick-change jaw options balance secure gripping with specimen protection. The grip is suitable for quality control in carbon fiber manufacturing, university composite-materials laboratories, new-material research and development, and polymer-materials testing. It supports repeatable batch testing for compliance-focused applications in aerospace, new energy, and carbon fiber composites.

Design Features and Benefits

Designed for ASTM D4018 Testing:
An adjustable operating pressure of 0.4–0.7 MPa provides stable gripping and accurate specimen alignment, helping reduce test-data scatter.
Quick-Change Jaws:
Jaw faces can be selected to suit the specimen material and changed quickly, helping protect specimen surfaces from clamping damage.
Low-Damage Gripping:
Uniform lateral pressure helps reduce filament breakage, slippage, and resin-layer damage. Suitable for 1K–24K carbon fiber tows.
Durable and Easy to Maintain:
Removable jaw faces can be cleaned or replaced, while the corrosion-resistant grip body is suitable for long-term laboratory use.
