ASTM C393

Engineered in strict accordance with ASTM C393, our core shear properties fixtures are designed to evaluate the flexural stiffness and core shear strength of flat sandwich constructions. Available in two robust steel configurations — featuring universal alignment joints, roller-connected loading pads for continuous contact, and adjustable spans — these fixtures ensure precise load distribution and perfect axial alignment. Capable of handling loads up to 30 kN and operating in extreme temperatures (-70 to 300 °C), they provide critical design allowables and quality control data for advanced bonded sandwich panels in the aerospace and marine industries.

Overview

Engineered in strict accordance with the ASTM C393 standard (excluding measurement devices), this fixture is designed to evaluate the flexural properties of flat sandwich constructions. It is primarily used to determine the core shear strength and core-to-facing shear strength by subjecting the sandwich panel to flexural loading. When equipped with a deflectometer, it can also measure the core shear modulus. This test method provides critical design allowables, material specifications, and R&D data, and serves as an essential tool for quality control in bonded sandwich panels.

Design Features and Benefits

Adjustable Spans:
Features an adjustable lower span and two standard-specific fixed upper spans, ensuring easy installation and precise alignment for different testing requirements.
Universal Alignment Joint:
The lower support is equipped with a universal alignment mechanism, guaranteeing that the applied force remains perfectly aligned with the testing machine's loading axis.
Roller-Connected Loading Pads:
The steel loading pads are connected to the supports via 15 mm diameter rollers, ensuring continuous and uniform contact between the pads and the specimen throughout the entire test.
Fully Adjustable Upper and Lower Spans:
Both the upper and lower spans are fully adjustable, offering maximum flexibility for various specimen sizes and testing configurations.

Applications

Primary Purpose:
Used to determine the core shear strength, core-to-facing shear strength, and flexural stiffness of flat sandwich constructions.
Material Evaluation:
Essential for structural design, material specification, and quality control of bonded sandwich panels used in aerospace, marine, and construction industries.
